Americas desert national parks might have a bad reputation during the summer months since these places can reach temperatures that are excruciatingly hot. However that does not mean that these desert national parks do not provide awesome hiking trails, incredible views and unforgettable camp spots. One of the best times to visit these desert national parks is during the fall. Head to America’s southwest this fall for a great camping or backpacking trip in the desert.
Now even though deserts are known for dry and hot climates, these desert destinations can have extreme temperature fluctuations throughout the day. 1. Big Bend National Park
Where: West Texas
Located in far west Texas, this park in the Chihuahuan desert boasts beautiful mountain views and the perfect climate during the fall months. This spectacular part of Texas proves that this state isn’t as flat as they say. Even though the Rio Grande rivers and its tributaries run through the park, some water sources in the Chisos mountains could be dry during the fall months. This park is a bird watcher’s paradise too; 250 species of birds are found in Big Bend, more than any other national park.
2. Utah’s National Parks
Where: Southern Utah
Utah is the perfect place to visit during the fall because of the mild temperatures. There are actually five national parks in the state: Zion NP, Canyonlands NP, Arches NP, Capitol Reef NP and Bryce Canyon NP. And they are all worth the visit during the autumn season. Each park is uniquely beautiful and will boast views of sandstone rock. Since Utah’s parks are a bit remote, resources and businesses near the parks might have shorter hours or be closed during the fall.
3. Death Valley National Park
Where: Border of California and Nevada
Death Valley National Park is known as America’s driest, hottest and lowest spot. This park is actually the biggest park south of Alaska. Hiking and camping season in Death Valley actually begins in October. This park has few constructed trails and encourages trail-less hiking, a freedom worth experiencing.
4. Joshua Tree National Park
Where: Southern California
Joshua Tree is an incredible park that boasts two different desert ecosystems, high desert and low desert. The park’s temperatures are just perfect during the fall season. Visitors typically hike, mountain bike or take a scenic drive through both high and low desert zones.
5. Grand Canyon National Park
Where: North Central Arizona
Grand Canyon National Park is known for vast views of the incredible gorge shaped by the Colorado River. The Little Colorado River and the (larger) Colorado River meet in this national park. The fall months are said to be the best months to visit this desert oasis. The popularity of this park skyrockets during the summer months, so the fall months experience far less people, making it the perfect way to avoid crowded trails and viewpoints.
6. Saguaro National Park
Where: Southern Arizona
Named after North America’s largest cactus, Saguaro National Park is a desert park located near Tucson, Arizona. High and low desert ecosystems can be find in Saguaro. Hike, bike or drive through this park to experience its incredible desert views.
